Financial literacy education

Supported by the Global Greengrants Fund, we are mobilizing PWDs for economic recovery and empower them with skills to reduce their vulnerability.

In Uganda, 16.4% of the population lives with some form of disability, with Kasese municipality accounting for 22.6% of all persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Kasese district. Despite their hopes and dreams, many PWDs in Kasese district face marginalization and exclusion. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this situation, particularly for PWDs in areas prone to environmental disasters such as flash floods and landslides, which left many displaced. These challenges pushed many PWDs into survival mode, breakdown in their livelihoods and increasing their vulnerability to gender-based violence.

The Strengthening Resilience and Economic Empowerment among PWDs project, supported by the Global Greengrants Fund, addresses these issues by mobilizing PWDs for economic recovery and empower them with skills to reduce their vulnerability. Building their capacities in human rights so they can demand and advocate for their rights, and assess the participation of PWDs in development projects to reduce stigma and discrimination towards them.

Through partnerships, with the Kasese District Association of Persons with Disabilities (KADUPEDI), the project mobilized groups of women with disabilities and provided them with training in financial literacy. Community dialogues were conducted, and the capacity of KADUPEDI's board members strengthened to improve project delivery. By integrating climate change interventions into these efforts, the project aims to enhance the resilience of PWDs in Kasese district, ensuring they are better equipped to cope with the impacts of environmental disasters and other challenges they face.
