Attacker's Guide to Defense Calls:

There are several things you may hear after attempting a Damage Call. The most common of these will be "Taken", indicating that your attack was successful. If you don't hear anything, it is usually assumed that either the attack was successful, blocked by a weapon or missed completely.

Of all of these, Rebound is the one you need to most pay attention to, all others indicate for some reason that your attack was either reduced in effectiveness or nullified completely.

You may also hear one of the following calls:

Absorb: This call indicates that the target has nullified your attack, and that they may use your attack at a later time - usually immediately.

Evade: This means that your target has the Skill (or ability) to dodge out of the way of incoming damage. Evade is multipurchase, so the Target may have more.

Gambler's Luck: This means that your target has the Skill (or ability) to completely avoid incoming damage. Gambler's Luck is multipurchase, so the Target may have more.

Garb: This indicates that your attack was ineffective because it only nicked a section of the Target's clothing.

Immune: This means that the attack is completely unable to affect the character. Typically characters with Immunity to something cannot lose it, so similar attacks made on the Target will continue to fail.

Parry: This means that your Target has the Skill to block hits that would otherwise have taken effect. As with most Skills, Parry is multipurchase and therefore the Target may have more of them. Also, Parry is one of the only defensive skills that may be used by a character other than the Target to block hits on the Target. (Ie., ToeKnee can parry a blow that hits Windem)

Rebound: This means that the Target has reflected your attack back at you. Whatever Damage Call you attempted to use, you now take as if the Target had hit you with it. As with Shield, it is unlikely that there is more than one Rebound of a given type on your Target.

Reduced: This means that the attack did minimal (1 pummel) damage due to the Target's armor being higher than or equal to your attack. Usually Armor doesn't degrade over the course of one combat, so future similar attacks are likely to be reduced as well.

Resist: This indicates that the Target took no damage and is able to Resist your attack. In many cases, the Target may still possess additional Resists. Additionally, a Resist is user-selectable, meaning that it can be "saved" for attacks that do a formidable amount of damage.

Roll: This means that your attack was reduced to "1 Pummel" because the Target possessed the skill "Roll With Hit" (or is able to replicate its effect). This Skill is multipurchase, so it is common for a Target to have multiple Rolls.

Shield: This means that the Target had a defense that was able to completely block your attack. Typically a Target may only have one Shield or Rebound of a given type, so it is likely that your next attack will land.

Threshold: This call means that your attack lacked the strength to even scratch the Target. Typically, Threshold expires after a certain time rather than number of hits, so it is unlikely that similar subsequent attacks will work either. Note that Reverse Thresholds exist as well. This means that your damage was too high to take effect rather than too low, although this is extremely uncommon.
