On the Guild Council? Yes
The Farmer’s Guild employs the largest number of people in Torodan, and has the majority of members. Because of this, the Farmer’s Guild has a long-standing history on the Guild Council, although it has never even given a candidate for Guild Master.
The Farmer’s Guild chooses its leaders simply. The oldest member, often the oldest person in Torodan, is chosen as the Guild Leader. For this reason, it seems, undead are never, under any circumstance, accepted into the Farmer’s Guild, even when they are able to become, and/or once were, citizens of Torodan. The Guild Leader selects the Provincials and Regionals, who hold their offices for life. Order Leaders and Chapterheads are selected by voting by those who are directly affected, namely members of the chapter or Order in question. There are no ranks within the Farmer’s Guild, but those who hold positions of advising or of governing within the guild are exempt from the requirements of growing crops. In meetings, while economics isn’t a direct factor in decision-making, that produce good crops/animals tend to have more weight in discussions than those who don’t. Some of the older members of the guild say that due to the amount of, “good old-fashioned common sense,” needed to produce a good crop or animal, that economics has absolutely nothing to do with it, and members are simply judging from what they know of the wisdom of other members.
The Farmer’s Guild seems to be on good terms with just about all of Torodan. They often work with the Forester’s Guild, outside of the Order of the Old Growth and the Order of the New Growth, and have a tradition of moving in farming after the trees have been cut down. (Something we are well aware of.) They are rarely at odds with the other large-area groups, the Sailor’s Guild being on the seas and the Miner’s Guild only infrequently surveying land that could be used for farming, and seem to maintain their position through good relations and simple policy.
The Order of the Field
Symbol: A green corn stalk on a yellow field
Current Order Leader: Lina Starson
Requirements to Join: Must work in agriculture
Requirements of Membership: Must work at least 1 season a year in agriculture
The largest single Order in Torodan, the Order of the field covers all styles of farming. From orchards to wheat to vineyards, all of the agriculture in Torodan comes from the Order of the Field. As a direct result of the many styles of farming that the Order encompasses, many farms are adaptable, and change their crops either to the needs of Torodan or the needs of the soil, allowing farmers to gain maximum profit for the maximum number of years that the soil can be worked. In recent years, the guild has started moving toward plantations, large farms owned by the guild and worked by guildmembers, and away from the smaller subsistence farms, increasing the guild’s income and trade relations with the rest of the world and the livelihood of many of its members. There is some dissent in the guild on this issue, as many feel that the guild is breaking away from its original purpose, supporting the farmers of Torodan, but few are arguing against the high production results that these plantations are producing.
The Order of the Calf
Symbol: A brown cow’s head on a green-dexter yellow field.
Current Order Leader: Jack Paulson, Owner of the Paulson and Roberts Estate
Requirements to Join: Must work in the raising of food animals or butchering of animals
Requirements of Membership: Must continue to work in the raising and butchering of animals at least 11 months out of the year
Butchers and raisers of animals for consumption, the Order of the Calf works almost invariably side-by-side with the Order of the Egg, detailed below. The Order of the Calf has two fronts of business, the first being the raising of pigs, cows, sheep, and other animals for the purposes of slaughter, and the other being running the businesses where said animals are killed, cut-up, and sold to the general public. Hunting, currently without real regulation in Torodan, is outside of the jurisdiction of this Order, although the Order of the Calf has been trying to muster political allies to change this, with others claiming that hunting should have its own Order, or continue without regulation.
The Order of the Egg
Symbol: A white egg on a green-dexter yellow field
Current Order Leader: Veron Falins, Owner of the Falins Estate
Requirements to Join: Must work in the creation of animal products for sale
Requirements of Membership: Must continue to work in the creation of animal products for sale at least 9 months out of the year
Originally a part of the Order of the Calf, the Order of the Egg has evolved from a few members to a growing branch industry with different farms than the Order of the Calf. While many joint-farming operations are still operated by members of both orders, many members have found that a cow that produces good beef or a sheep that produces good mutton is not the same as a cow that produces good milk or a sheep that produces good wool. For these reasons, as well as many others, joint-ownership is occurring less and less, farmers working more with members of their own Order, and less with members of each other’s orders.
The Order of the Horse
Symbol: A brown horse’s on a yellow-dexter green field
Current Order Leader: Colonel Helen Uldson, Owner of the Ranch of Monsters, previously Uldson Farms
Requirements to Join: Must work in the raising of domesticated animals
Requirements of Membership: Must continue working in raising domesticated animals for at least 10 months out of the year
The domesticated animals of Torodan, dogs, cats, horses, and more, usually come from the Order of the Horse. Certainly, if one requires a thoroughbred horse, or a hunting dog, or a specific breed of cat, the Order of the Horse would be the only place in Torodan to really go, the markets of foreign sailors rarely dealing in domesticated animals. Known for keen breeding practices and ensuring that the wrong animals do not crossbreed, the Order of the Horse has recently undergone a vast project, known as the “Ranch of Monsters.” Col. Uldson, head of the Order, was once a member of the adventurer’s guild before settling down and raising war dogs, most of which are still sold to the adventurer’s guild. Currently, she is starting work on the Ranch of Monsters, which will attempt to domesticate gryphons, giant lions, and other beasts that have so far been unable to be tamed. If the project is successful, it will no doubt bring in not only a windfall of investment and prestige, both foreign and domestic, to the Order, but it may also change the nature of war throughout the human lands, with monsters being viable tools of battle.
The Order of the Garden
Symbol: A green flower with red petals on a yellow field
Current Order Leader: Boris Tacks
Requirements to Join: Must maintain a garden for spices and herbs for sale
Requirements of Membership: Must keep the garden maintained for at least 2 seasons/year
The smallest Order of the Farmer’s Guild, the Order of the Garden is kept alive almost entirely through investments by other guilds. The Mage’s Guild uses the Order of the Garden for the growing of components, and will buy them at quite handsome prices from the experienced growers of this Order, and the Healer’s Guild also employs the Order in the obtaining of materials for salves and potions. A few members of the Order of the Garden are said to work surreptitiously with the materials that produce deadly poisons, and as with most rumors of illicit deeds, the claims hold that these members maintain ties to various orders in Torodan, including the Order of the Black Cloth, the Order of the Black Blade, the Order of the Dark Steed, and the Masked Order, as well as some rumors that claim ties to the Churches of Veil and Rissir, secret groups of Mongrels and Dark Elves, and cults of Isikil, Rend, and Mordekai.
