After the Brother’s War of Magic, the students of Rio and those who lived near the crater saw a change in their children. At around age 13, they would show signs of the taint of Discord. Perhaps it was due to some evil their master had done, or perhaps it was simply due to the taint in the area, but these children looked like those who had suffered the taint of the vile powers of discord. There was much controversy on what was to be done with these children, who seemed to be a race in their own right, as it was feared that they might all become monsters resembling Rio, and if so, how powerful would these abominations become?
Perhaps fortunately, the pathways shattered before the Terrans could come up with an appropriate answer to the question. Few of these “mutants” made it through the pathways before the planet became uninhabitable for Terrans, and those who did were ostracized even more than before. In time they were forgotten. Mutants became a legend, and if they did exist, they surely died with the end of the Terran home world. But there was one point that everyone overlooked...
The planet had become uninhabitable for Terrans, and it was quite evident that these beings were no longer Terran, though they were of that planet. When their home world was rediscovered, so were they.
Each Mutant begins with a minor taint of discord, but is otherwise Terran in appearance. They learn Melody for two points less, this is partially due to their familiarity with Harmonics and partially due to the fact that Mutant society is used to dealing with many different types of bodies. Mutants need to spend two more skill points for them to learn Meditation, and most likely due to the inherent discord within them. Many believe that just as the Betrayer aids his children, the Phoenix attempts to destroy them. The fact that Mutants are resistant to Mystic abilities doesn’t help any. Some scholars believe that The Betrayer’s victory over The Mountain created this. This combined with their innate resistance to Discord effects make for a powerful anti-mystic force along the Pathways. They are generally weaker, however, and this is thought to be due to the destabilizing effects of so many conflicting energies. This affects aging, and Mutants are effectively 10 years younger than the person who plays them is.
On The Terran home world, Mutants typically dressed in the rags left over from Terran society. Upon discovering what other worlds had to offer, however, most Mutants began dressing in combinations as wild and fantastic as their own nature. They have developed a communal society, with people working in their family groups to ensure their survival. While it has been said that family is every Mutant’s highest value, it has also been said that there is no such thing as a sane mutant. Every mutant character must have some form of insanity or wildness about him, whether it be that he thinks that machines are powered by ghosts, has an obsession with shiny objects, thinks that all worlds are flat, or even believes that he is more than one person, a mutant must have some form of insanity. A word to the wise when creating a mutant character, however, make you character’s insanity fun, subtle, and not make ones that will result in your character’s death. No one wants to play with a character that kills every person who he comes across, and surely such a character would not last long. However, believing that lights are alive and saying hello to them can be good for conversation.
Most Mutants are members of the Mystic class, and Mutant society as a whole holds no prejudice against the use of Discord. The remainder of society is fairly spread out among the 4 classes, but at least 75% of mutants are mystics. Mutant society doesn’t have names, preferring to call people, friend, foe, or other general titles. Though many adopt names that others give them, based on their unique trait. As an example, a Mutant with blue skin might be called “Ocean,” “Sky,” or even just “Blu,” while a Mutant with a third, non-moving arm might be referred to as “Limpy.”
Costuming/Makeup:
All mutants start with one minor discord taint, usually this is something like a patch of unusually colored skin or a small (nonfunctioning) appendage. In addition, most Mutants favor crude or worn out clothing.
Race Opinions:
- Terrans: Terrans? We are Terrans, but while they are all the same, WE are individuals.
- Rinn: Ah, they understand the arts as well as we, but they do not understand the value of disorder.
- Furries: They are as varied as we; they make great companions.
- Burgunns: Oh, they are a grounded people. They will never attain mastery as we might.
- Technoids: I don’t trust them; they are not even really alive.
- Ork: Brutish. They will never hold any sort of real power.
