Overview
Economic concerns are separated into two separate categories: Debriefing Costs and In Play money.
Debriefing costs refer to any cost that takes place during the debriefing period before and after a game. Usually this consists of weapon charging and paying for production skills such as Chemistry and Weapon design. Under most circumstances, any money combinations can be used to pay these costs as long as the overall value of the currency provided meets the cost of the desired purchases regardless of the In Play exchange rates. A local chapter may overrule this rule if they announce ahead of time that they will be using an alternate exchange rate for debriefing costs, but the exchange rate must be announced beforehand if this is going to happen, and this should be a short term situation. Also factored into Debriefing Costs is the treasure generated by Treasure Policy for the game day. If 500 credits are generated by the players to go into the treasure for the day, those 500 credits may be taken in any form of money regardless of the In Play exchange rates. For Treasure generation purposes, the exchange rate may not be altered by the local chapter.
In Play costs refer to the In Play costs of services and items as sold by NPCs or PCs. Each chapter (and sometimes different planets or areas inside the same chapter, or even NPCs inside the same town) may have exchange rates which differ from the lists below. Most of the time, Plot will be close to or the same as the exchange rates listed below. However, frequent exceptions can and probably will occur. A Furry trader on a Burgunn world who has never seen an Ork before will have little or no use for Ork teeth, so he may charge double or triple the normal exchange rate for someone paying with that currency if he even accepts it at all. Conversely, a Rinn trader on that same world may interact with an Ork held planet and may put a premium rate on the same “worthless” currency the Furry rejected. In other cases, a Terran world may be involved in a war with a Furry world and even their currency may be considered contraband.
For the most part, races usually use the Burgunn Imperial Credits system since the Burgunn Empire spans the largest portion of territory across the universe. All Rulebook listings referring to costs will be listed in Burgunn credits for consistency. Local chapters may or may not tend towards a single currency system or very few of them, this is handled at the local level.
Most of the currency types are represented by various laminated cutouts. In Play these look like their descriptions in the appropriate sections below. Most will also have the standard exchange value printed on them for player, Plot and Debriefing convenience. Except in the case of the Burgunn credits, the numbers are considered OOP.
Note that if a physrep is destroyed, the money is considered destroyed as well. This most commonly applies to Terran bills, since they are not laminated when produced.
Currency and Exchange Rates
Burgunn Empire: The Burgunn Empire uses Imperial Credits. These take the form of small plastic squares of the appropriate color with a small embedded chip to prevent forgery.
- Red - standard unit of measurement, represents one Credit.
- 1 Green = 10 Reds
- 1 Blue = 100 Reds
- 1 Gold = 1000 Reds
Rinn Empire: Each Rinn Clan type had a different money system, although since formalizing into an empire the money types have been integrated into a common system. Still, many individual clans favor one specific type and set their prices based on that one type. Rinn currency is made using a special metallic compound which can be tinted to colors reflecting the money type. (color) in the descriptions refers to the color the metal is dyed (and the color of the OOP physrep)
- 1 Star (Yellow) = 100 Reds
- 5 Flames (Red) = 1 Star
- 10 Storms (Purple) = 1 Star
- 20 Waves (Blue) = 1 Star
- 100 Stones (Green) = 1 Star
Fur Federation: In the early days, the head, arms, legs, etc were taken as literals, Furry traders would literally trade captured body parts in exchange for goods. In recent days, Furry clans brand small cutouts of leather with symbols to keep from being considered barbaric.
- 1 Head = 10 Reds
- 2 Arms = 1 Head
- 4 Legs = 1 Head
- 8 Tails = 1 Head
- 16 Wings = 1 Head
Technoid Mainframe: The Technoid Mainframe uses Burgunn Imperial Credits, although instead of plastic money they issue a single plastic card with a computer chip that records how much money is left on the card. This system is regulated by the mainframe directly so is almost impossible to “cheat”.
Mutant Families: Mutants have always utilized the barter system, so have no money system of their own. They tend to use whatever money system is most common on the planet when trading with non-mutants.
Ork Tribes: Orks take the teeth from fallen foes as symbols of their conquest. Particularly good teeth are marked by their Chief and used as currency when trading with other Orks. Non Orks usually consider teeth to be next to worthless, although Orks avoid trading in anything else wherever possible.
- 3 Animal Teeth = 1 Red
- 1 Slave Tooth = 3 Animal Teeth
- 1 Kill Tooth = 3 Slave Teeth
- 1 Ork Tooth = 3 Kill Teeth
- 1 Boss Tooth = 3 Ork Teeth
Onarl: Onarl don’t generally engage in trade since they follow the idea of community based property and are usually isolated from the other inhabitants on their worlds. Trading is not a foreign concept to MOST onarl communities, although the idea of a currency is a foreign concept.
Terran Empire: The Terran Empire issues paper bills and metal coins as their currency. Coins are used for the smaller values and bills are used for the larger values. Value in Cities is printed on the money. Listed in ()’s is what the money looks like. Physreps will also have the Burgunn credit equivalent printed, although this number isn’t printed on the money In Play.
- 10 Cities (Small Purple Coin) = 1 Red
- 1 State (Large Purple Coin) = 5 Cities
- 1 Country (Small Teal Coin) = 10 Cities
- 1 World (Large Teal Coin) = 50 Cities
- 1 Cluster (Small Red Bill) = 100 Cities
- 1 Quadrant (Large Red Bill) = 500 Cities
- 1 Empire (Small Orange Bill) = 1000 Cities
- 1 Galaxy (Large Orange Bill) = 5000 Cities
